Meeting the Demand of Modern Architectural Metalwork

with KOHLER Technology

In the world of architectural metal fabrication, precision isn’t just a goal, it’s a necessity. When your products are the visual centerpiece of a building’s design, every bend, cut, and finish must meet the highest standards. That’s the daily reality for the team at Sheet Metal Supply, Ltd., a company known for its craftsmanship, technical expertise, and commitment to quality.

Based in Grayslake, Illinois, Sheet Metal Supply produces a wide range of building envelope solutions, including metal roofing and wall systems, flashing, perimeter systems, and aluminum composite panels. In recent years, they’ve expanded into bespoke custom fabrication, working with materials up to 0.25” steel and aluminum, and even heavier, for facades, screens, grilles, and substructural components. This evolution reflects their drive to meet the increasingly complex demands of modern architecture.

Pushing the Boundaries of Metal Fabrication

Their facility is equipped with a wide array of high-performance machinery including a Mazak fiber laser, Amada turret punches, AXYZ routers, Safan Darley press brakes, and over 15 folding machines—underscoring their philosophy of always having the right tool for the job. The addition of the KOHLER 60P.1600 Peak Performer fits seamlessly into this ecosystem, reinforcing their commitment to quality, efficiency, and precision.

The Challenge: Precision and Aesthetic Excellence

As Sheet Metal Supply expanded into heavier and more aesthetically critical products, they faced a growing need for precision leveling. Warped sheets and hidden stresses in flat stock were causing inefficiencies and quality concerns, especially during laser cutting and turret punching. When looking for a solution to these problems their goal was clear: ensure consistent, high-quality output while maintaining speed and reducing waste.

The Solution: KOHLER Peak Performer

After extensive research, testing, and even toll processing trials, Sheet Metal Supply chose the Peak Performer 60P.1600 part leveling machine from KOHLER, a decision that reflected their exacting standards and long-term vision. The machine’s energy efficient servo-electric drive system aligned perfectly with their sustainability goals, especially with their solar array now covering over half of their electricity needs. Operators found the machine intuitive and user-friendly, with seamless integration of powered infeed and outfeed tables that streamlined production and reduced labor requirements. The ease with which the machine can be cleaned has been an additional unexpected benefit.

What truly set the KOHLER machine apart was its versatility. Whether handling thin blanks or heavy plates, the leveler delivered consistent results that simplified both inbound quality control and outbound product reliability. From the first meeting at Fabtech Chicago to installation and training, KOHLER provided exceptional support, helping to turn a smart investment into a strategic advantage.

Real Results: Time, Money, and Quality Saved

“Our KOHLER has saved us not only time, but also money in being able to run machines at full speed, save warped sheets, and create more consistent bends.”
— Zach Timmerman, Project Manager

Whether leveling material before laser and turret work or correcting issues from the mill, the KOHLER 60P has become an indispensable part of their production line.

Looking Ahead

Now that the KOHLER Peak Performer is in place, Sheet Metal Supply is considering future integrations, such as pairing the leveler with a large finisher. For now, they’re thrilled with the performance and reliability of their KOHLER 60P.1600 and are open to taking on contract leveling for other fabricators. Their machine can level parts up to 17mm/.669 inch thick and 1600mm/63 inches wide.
