The Importance of Part Leveling in Metal Fabrication

Enhancing Bending and Welding Productivity with Precision-Leveled Parts

At first glance, sheet metal and plates may appear perfectly flat when delivered to a fabrication shop. However, hidden internal stresses can cause distortions during cutting, bending, and welding—leading to quality issues and inefficiencies in production.

Why Flatness Matters in Metal Fabrication

Sheet metal and plates are initially produced in coils at the mill. These coils are later uncoiled, straightened, and cut to length at service centers. While the sheets may seem flat, residual stress remains within the material, affecting its grain structure and behavior during processing.

When metal parts are cut, punched, or stamped, these internal stresses are released, causing unwanted deformations. This can lead to rework, misalignment in welding, and inconsistencies in bending angles—ultimately impacting production efficiency and end-product quality.

How Part Leveling Machines Solve These Challenges

Part leveling machines eliminate internal stresses, ensuring consistently flat and stable sheet metal for downstream processes. By removing deformations before fabrication, these machines:

- Improve bending accuracy – reducing springback and ensuring precise angles
- Enhance welding precision – preventing warping and misalignment
- Increase process efficiency – minimizing rework and material waste
- Boost product quality – delivering parts that meet the highest industry standards
